The Seamen's Bethel was a fixture of the great novel "Moby Dick," designated the "Whaleman's Chapel" by Melville for its role as a memorial to the local whalemen and fishermen who have lost their lives at sea. Inside the 1830s chapel, 31 black-framed cenotaphs line the main area, bearing names of the deceased lost or buried at sea. The exterior's stately, elegant design provides a model of 19th-century architectural grace. It stands along the downtown waterfront, near the State Pier.
