Established in 1907 by the Old Dartmouth Historical Society, the New Bedford Whaling Museum is the largest of its kind in the United States, offering displays, art work, and antiques and memoriabilia outlining the history of the industry from its heyday in the late 1700's to the present day. Exhibits include the half-scale Lagoda Whaling Bark (the largest ship model in the world), a full-scale replica of a whaling ship's Fo’c’sle (which visitors can enter and explore), and the massive skeleton of a 45-ton Sperm Whale that washed up on the shore of Nantucket in 2002. The museum lies within whaling's greatest port, along the downtown waterfront, near the entrance to the New Bedford Fairhaven Bridge.
